The private pension market in the first quarter of 2021

 

Bucharest, 8 June 2021 –The private pension market was least affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, given its long-term savings and investment policy. Over time, there have been episodes of volatility that marked private pension funds, but their assets recorded overall growth from one period to another.

At the end of March 2021, the private pension funds (Pillar II and Pillar III) accumulated 83.34 billion lei in total assets, 33% more compared to the previous year. The total assets of the private pension system were 7.9% of the GDP.

The share of investments in fixed income securities represented, at the end of the first quarter of the year, 71% of the total investment portfolio of private pension funds, while 24% were investments in shares.

 

Privately managed pension funds - Pillar II (January-March 2021)

  • total value of assets - 80.24 billion lei;
  • value of net assets - 80.19 billion lei;
  • number of participants - 7.68 million people;
  • average contribution of participants - 197 lei / participant;
  • contributions transferred to the privately managed pension system - 2.42 billion lei;
  • weighted average rate of return - 6.10%;
  • the average asset value of a participant - 10,670 lei;
  • payments of net personal assets to participants - approximately 64 million lei to 3,991 participants and beneficiaries.

 

Voluntary pension funds - Pillar III (January-March 2021)

 

  • the total value of net assets - 3.10 billion lei;
  • the number of participants enrolled in the voluntary pension system - 534,760 persons
  • average contribution - 145 lei / participant;
  • contributions transferred to the voluntary pension system - 92 million lei;
  • the weighted average rate of return of all high-risk voluntary pension funds - 9.09%;
  • the weighted average rate of return of all medium-risk voluntary pension funds - 7.79%;
  • the average value of an account - 5,797 lei;
  • payments of net personal assets to participants - approximately 27 million lei to 2,587 participants and beneficiaries.
