Bucharest, 10 November 2025 – The Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF) will represent Romania on the Executive Committee of the International Organization of Private Pension Supervisors (IOPS) for the period 2026–2027.
The election of ASF, represented by Vice-President Daniel Armeanu, to the Executive Committee of IOPS was approved at the General Assembly of the International Organisation of Private Pension Supervisors, held in Istanbul between 5 and 7 November 2025. This move reconfirms the recognition of Romania's contribution in the field of private pension system supervision and its active role in developing global standards, principles, and best practices regarding sustainability and the protection of pension fund participants.
"Romania's participation in the leadership of the IOPS is an international recognition of the maturity and professionalism of our private pension system. It is an opportunity to actively contribute to strengthening the global pension architecture at a time when stability and intergenerational equity are becoming pillars of public confidence in modern economies," said Mr. Alexandru Petrescu, the ASF President.
Present at the General Assembly in Istanbul, Mr. Daniel Armeanu, Vice President of ASF, emphasized the importance of ensuring regular and sustainable payments for future pensioners as a central element of a balanced private pension system.
"During the meetings in Istanbul, discussions focused on ways in which pension systems can provide stable and sustainable income for future pensioners. The main objective of the IOPS is to improve the quality and efficiency of private pension system supervision globally in order to guarantee stable long-term retirement income. In this context, long-term periodic payments from pension funds are encouraged, and it is recommended to avoid lump-sum payments, except in cases where the assets are of low value or in exceptional cases," explained Mr. Daniel Armeanu.
The International Organisation of Private Pension Supervisors (IOPS) is an independent body, created in 2004, which aims to improve the quality and efficiency of private pension supervision at international level. Currently, IOPS has 90 members from 79 jurisdictions, including the OECD and the World Bank, and is the most representative global platform for cooperation in this field. Romania has been a member of IOPS since 2007.
The IOPS Executive Committee is the main governing body of the organization, with a two-year term, consisting of 5–15 members from at least three continents. It sets strategic objectives, coordinates the organization's activities, and liaises with other international institutions.
ASF will continue to actively contribute to the development of the international private pension market, promoting high standards of transparency, fairness, and protection for participants.
